ARTICLE 1 - Rule
The A.M.A. CALABRIA announces the 18th International Piano Competition opened to pianists of all nationalities born after the 1st January 1973 under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture - Department of Recreation, the Calabria Region, the Municipality of Lamezia Terme.

ARTICLE 2 - Programme
The competition consists of the following rounds:
PRELIMINARY ROUND
a) Two studies by different composers, chosen among those of Bartok, Casella, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt (except op. 1), Prokof’ev,Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Stravinskij.
b) A composition freely chosen by the candidate: performance time must not exceed 10 minutes.
SEMIFINAL ROUND
a) J.S. Bach: A prelude and fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier
b) D. Scarlatti: A sonata of a brilliant character
c) L.van Beethoven: A sonata (except op. 14 n. 1 and 2,
op. 49 n. 1 and 2 and op. 79)
FINAL ROUND
a) A recital not exceeding 45 minutes including a sonata by Haydn or
Clementi, or Mozart and two or more compositions, one of which of the romantic period and the other one from Debussy to our times. It’s forbidden to repeat any composition played in the previous rounds.
b) A concerto for piano and orchestra to be selected among the
followings:

F.J. Haydn: D Major Hob. XVIII-11
W.A. Mozart: all the concertos
L.van Beethoven: all the concertos
F. Chopin: E minor op. 11 or F minor op. 21
R. Schumann: A minor op. 54
F. Mendelssohn: G minor op. 25
F. Liszt: E flat Major S 124 or A Major S 125
C. Franck: Variations symphoniques
J. Brahms: D minor op. 15 or B flat Major op. 83
P. I. Cajkovskij: B flat minor op. 23
E. Grieg: A minor op. 16
A. Dvorák: G minor op. 33
C. Saint-Saens: G minor op. 22
M. Ravel: G Major
S. Rachmaninov: C minor op. 18 or D minor op. 30
G. Gershwin: F or Rhapsody in Blue
S. Prokof’ev: D flat Major op. 10 or G minor op. 16 or C Major op. 26
D. Sostakovic: F Major op. 102

Candidates must play by heart all the compositions but the contemporary ones.
All the compositions must be original and the editions have to be updated.

ARTICLE 3 - The Jury
The Jury consists of seven members most of them coming from different Countries. The Jury may not be formed by members who have or have had family connections, affinities and private tuition relations with one or more candidates in the two years preceding the beginning of the auditions. Those members who have or have had public didactic relations with one or more candidates in the two years preceding the beginning of the auditions must abstain from the
discussion and the voting for those candidates.They must not be present during the vote. Such abstention shall be recorded in the Contest records.
At the establishment of the Jury each member has to declare his/her personal
situation towards the candidates with a reference to the above provisions.

The Association Board designates the Jury. If necessary the A.M.A. President can replace one or more Jury’s members with a well-determined reason which has to be confirmed by the Board.
Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and of the Calabria Region can be
present at the works of the Jury.

ARTICLE 4 - Evaluation
The rounds preceding the final one are judged with “pass” or “not pass”.
The final evaluation is the average of the secret votes given by each member of the Jury excluding the highest and the lowest vote.
For the 1st prize it is necessary that the candidate had the highest vote, a minimum of 98/100; for the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th and the 5th respectively a minimum of 96, 94, 92, 90/100.
At the end of each performance the issues are made public. The Jury’s decisions are final: they cannot be changed or desputed.
Each exam, act or decision drawn up by the Jury has to be approved and subscribed by the President or his substitute at the end of every session.
The Jury’s records are public and it is possible to take note of them at the Secretary’ s office.

ARTICLE 5 - Time and candidates’ roll-call
The execution may be interrupted by the Jury’s president at the expiry of the
maximum allowed time.
The candidates’ roll is called the evening before the beginning of the preliminary auditions.
The order of candidates’ partecipation will be in sequence starting from the number drawn by lot at the candidates’ presence.
The order remains the same for all the rounds.
Candidates have to present their identification document and a copy of the chosen compositions to be performed, in the editions going to be used, at the beginning of their performance. The sequence of the pieces is left to the candidates. All phases of the Competition will be open to the public.

ARTICLE 6 - Prizes
1st prize (indivisible), in memory of the pianist Sergio Fiorentino, of € 3.000,00 cup and diploma.
The winner will be offered 10 Concerts with the following Associations for the 2008/2009 concert season according to the formalities settled by each association:

Amici della Musica - Catanzaro

Associazione Cultura e Musica “Curci” - Barletta (BA)
Big Agency di Bacau in Romania (2 recitals and a concert
with orchestra).

2nd prize of € 2.000,00 cup and diploma.
3rd prize of € 1.000,00 cup and diploma.
4th prize of € 800,00 cup and diploma.
5th prize of € 600,00 cup and diploma.

Finalists will receive a medal of the A.M.A. Calabria and a diploma.
Semifinalists will get a diploma.

The Jury can refuse to award the prize if the candidates don’t have the requisitions for the admission.

ARTICLE 7 - The winners
The winners will perform in a public concert in Grandinetti Theatre according to the decisions of the Jury and of the Association.

In case of recordings no fees shall be paid to any candidate by the A.M.A.Calabria or the “Audio - Video Agency”.

ARTICLE 8 - Inscription
Candidates have to send the application form to: “A.M.A. CALABRIA”
The following documents must be enclosed with the application form: a birth certificate, a copy of the passport, the application fee, a short curriculum vitae (principal teachers, competition prizes and concerts) and a recent photograph name marked on the reverse.
These documents have to be sent as a registered letter or presented at the
secretary’s office no later than 15th April 2008 to:

The postmark of the application form will prove the validity of this term. Birth certificate is not obligatory if the candidate has already taken part in the same contest in past times.

Application fee of Euro 80,00 (free of bank charges) is to be paid:

The application fee will be reimbursed under no circumstances. The application to the International Piano Competition, implies that the candidate accepts, without reserve, the rule.

In case of claims or objections the only official and legally applicable rule is that written in Italian.
